Namesake[change source]

This sentence was removed from the article:

"Despite its name being the namesake of the county that it stands in, the county town is Lifford and the largest town is Letterkenny.

The first clause seems to say that the town was named for the county? What is the source which confirms this?

Is it not more likely that the county was named for the town? ENWP explains

"Donegal gave its name to County Donegal ...."
