"He set up a rather modern democratic republic in Florence." Incredible statement. Nothing democratic about this personality cult. The early Renaissance Florentine Republic had already been superseded and his extremist repression was a sad interlude in the Medici hegemony. This wishful fantasy may be of comfort to some who cheer for anti-Papists, but his entire career resembles more of an Ayatollah or Taliban flavor.
