He learned things about the Battle of the Little Bighorn from his grandmother's brother, White Man Runs Him, and three other of Custer's scouts at that battle . Later in life, he gave talks about the battle. His WWII deeds earned him the war chief title. His accomplishments included stealing enemy horses and engaging in hand-to-hand combat with a German. He had a master's degree in anthropology, which he earned in 1939. He belonged to the Whistling Water clan.
