MIAS in Korea update[change source]

On June 6, 2018 the VFW Commander in Chief wrote to President Trump regarding discussing the US MIAs at the upcoming summit.[1] On June 11,2018 Veterans call for agreement on repatriation of MIAs remains at upcoming summit.[2] On June 13, 2018 the VFW was optimistic about the upcoming summit.[3] On June 19, 2018 Fox News reported North Korea was to return to the US remains of up to 200 American Service members[4] after the summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un.[5] Trump announced MIAs would be returned from North Korea.[6] As of June 23, 2018 Identifying MIAs from North Korea will be difficult.[7] On June 24, 2018 The United States sent 100 coffins to Korea.[8] On June 27, 2018 The US House of Representatives has allocated 10 million to help bring back US MIAs remains.[9]On July 5, 2018 Trumps efforts have been applauded by Indiana Senators Donnelly and Young.[10] On July 9, 2018 the POW/MIA Director is traveling to northeast Asia in regard to MIAs.[11] Hunt for US Korea dead will take months[12] As of July 12, 2018 Trump has a nice letter from Kim; North Korea hasn't shown up for repatriation.[13] On July 13,2018 it was announced that the US had returned to South Korea the remains of a identified South Korean Soldier who had been found during a US-N.K. excavation in 2001; in return South Korea returned to the United States the remains of a unidentified U.S. Soldier who had been found 80 kilometers north of Seoul in the Iron Triangle (Korea) area in 2016; the US is trying to identify the remains of 180 Asian soldiers.[14][15]On July 15, 2018 talks between the US and North Korea On US MIAs began again.[16][17]On July 17, 2018 the US is expecting as many as remains of 55 MIAs within two weeks[18]hopefully by July 27, 2018 the 65th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice.[19][20][21]Recovery of US MIAS remains "Hindered".[22]Trump tells VFW Convention MIAs remains to be returned "Soon".[23]On July 27,2018 55 boxes of the remains of US MIAS are on their way home from North Korea.[24][25][26]US search teams could be sent to North Korea to search for US MIAS.[27]One military dogtag was provided with the remains.[28][29] [The ID tag belonged to MSgt Charles H. McDaniel of the US 8th Cavalry Regiment casualty 2 November 1950][30][31] There is also an appeal for relatives to provide DNA to help Identify-DNA has been collected for 91% of Korea War MIAS and for 85% of Cold War MIAS {111} Lost near Korea.[32]As of August 1,2018 a working number of Korea War MIAs is 7,691[33][34] On August 2, 2018 Trump thanked Kim for returning remains.[35]Reportedly the remains were found on the east side of the Chosin Reservoir at Sin Hung-Ri village.[36]The size of the Pentagon ID Team will be doubled to help identify the remains [37]The condition of the remains vary[38]On August 13,2018 the remains of Pvt Kenneth B. Williams of the 32nd US Infantry MIA December 2, 1950 at Chosin Reservoir and on August 14,2018 the remains of MIA Pvt George L Spangenberg of the 8th US Cavalry Regiment MIA November 2,1950 Unsan North Korea were identified; In both cases the DPAAMA was grateful to the people and Goverment of the DPROK for recovering the two soldiers remains;[39][40];also on August 14,2018 the US/UN Command handed over to North Korea the remains of a unknown North Korean Soldier found in 2017.[41] On August 21,2018 the US Senate approved the 10 million aid packet which had been passed in the US House of Represeantives 1 1/2 months before.[42]
