I don't know of anyone who doubts the existence of Socrates. It doesn't make sense for him to be fictional, since multiple sources wrote about him (Plato, Xenophanes, Aristophanes, Aristotle) as though he were real. On the other hand, almost all of what Plato wrote *about* Socrates is clearly a fictional embellishment of his speeches in support of certain ideas with many new ideas from Plato mixed in.

Hey, I'm just rephrasiing from en:
'The actual existence of Socrates is still debated, as little direct evidence proves his existence.'

I don't know how to delete the obscene last para but could someone please do it - I would like to direct school students to simple wiki, but not with this sort of material. Bmcd (talk) 04:15, 6 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
