Notes on spelling: Rasha Chorbaji/Sharbaji/Shurbaji ( رشا شربجي )[change source]

The common spelling, for Wikipedia purposes, appears to be with "sh". The only source that uses the "ch" spelling is the initial announcement from the State Department, and sources that cite it.

Note that in Arabic the ش letter is pronounced "sh", as in sheik ( شيخ ). See also en:Shin (letter).

Here are three independent Arabic-language based sources in English, all use the "sh" spelling.

The origin of the name seems to be the Office of the Syrian Network for Human Rights, which does extensive research on human rights in Syria, and provided Rasha's name to the U.S. State department. Their website spells the name "Rasha Sharbaji". http://sn4hr.org/blog/2015/09/03/11654/ An earlier (June 2014) post referred to her as "Rasha Sharbji" http://sn4hr.org/blog/2014/06/05/the-syrian-government-has-been-detaining-a-pregnant-lady-and-her-three-sons-for-more-than-ten-days/

Arabic is an abjad script and is written from right to left.
