Purpose[change source]

This template facilitates the citation of articles from the American National Biography in the manner of {{Cite encyclopedia}}.

Usage[change source]

  • |year=1999 (|date= will override this)
  • |encyclopedia=[[American National Biography]]

Article titles and identifiers
  • |title=<name of the ANB article>
  • |id=<number> – This is nonstandard and consists of the "article number" (the last set of digits of an ANB doi or biography URL); creates an internal doi if |doi= not present
    • In the following examples, the bold portion is the ID (1201523).
      • https://www.anb.org/view/10.1093/anb/9780198606697.001.0001/anb-9780198606697-e-1201523
      • https://doi.org/10.1093/anb/9780198606697.article.1201523
  • |doi=<doi> – Can be used instead of the parameter |id=
  • |url=<URL of the ANB article> – Can be used with or in place of the parameters |id= or |doi=
Some articles are freely available to the public, such as Shirley Chisholm. In those cases, you can add the freearticle parameter.
