This template takes an optional id parameter, heading and page number or numbers for the MSW3 entry on the species or other taxon in question.

Gardner contributed the following sections to MSW3: Order Didelphimorphia, Order Paucituberculata, Order Microbiotheria, Order Cingulata and Order Pilosa. When no heading is employed, it may be advantageous to use instead one of the more specific taxon-based templates ({{MSW3 Didelphimorphia}}, {{MSW3 Paucituberculata}}, {{MSW3 Microbiotheria}}, {{MSW3 Cingulata}} or {{MSW3 Pilosa}}), which supply a default chapter heading.
