Hurricane Alberto was the first tropical storm and hurricane of the 2000 Atlantic hurricane season. Alberto was a long lived hurricane, lasting nearly 3 weeks from when it started on August 3 to when it became extratropical, August 23. It started as a tropical wave that moved off the coast of Africa and got stronger, becoming Tropical Depression Three by August 3. The strength of Hurricane Alberto changed alot, it went from tropical storm to hurricane three times. It was also the hurricane in the Atlantic that traveled the second longest path, this is because it tracked about 6,500 miles around in the Atlantic. Even thought all of this happened, Alberto barley affected land. Hurricane Alberto did not cause any damage or deaths along its path.

Storm history[change | change source]

Storm path

A tropical wave was seen by satellites on July 30 over Africa. It moved to the west and got into the Atlantic Ocean on August 3. This wave quickly looked better on satellites and it became a Tropical Depression Three soon after that. The next day it became a tropical storm; the National Hurricane Center named it Alberto. [1] On October 6, Tropical Storm Alberto became a hurricane; this made it Hurricane Alberto.

Wind shear, which causes cyclones to weakened, increased over Hurricane Alberto, so it weakened back to a tropical storm on August 8. Alberto moved to the northwest and became a hurricane again on August 10. After this, it started turning north before it bent back to the northeast. On August 11, it became a category 2 hurricane and soon after, a category 3 hurricane. Hurricane Alberto also reached its highest winds, they were at 125 miles per hour, the pressure was also at 950 mbar. After that it slowly weakened back, also it began to made a loop. Alberto weakened back to a tropical storm after wind shear increased on August 14. On August 15 Tropical Storm Alberto was forced to moved south and later on, to the southwest.

Alberto became a hurricane again for its third and final time on August 18. Hurricane Alberto peaked as category 2 hurricane before again weakening.

Effects[change | change source]

The tropical wave that would end up as Alberto caused one inch of rain in Dakar, Senegal. There were also high wave along the east coast of the United States from Alberto. People in Bermuda and Azores were asked to watch Hurricane Alberto in case it were to approach. Because there were not major effects to land, the name Alberto did not get retired in the Spring of 2001. It was used again in 2006 and will also be used again in 2012.
