Term 3 Wikipedia Project[change | change source]

Your task is to write some information on the Simple English Wikipedia article for a country. You may work in groups. Your work will contribute to one of the biggest collections of knowledge in the world. It may be used by people around the world! Take care, and have fun!

On the server, in your Term 3 folder, start a new folder called “Wikipedia Project”[change | change source]

Finding and logging in to Wikipedia[change | change source]

  1. Go to simple.wikipedia.org
  2. Log in each time you edit Wikipedia.
  3. Plan what you will write.
  4. Get together with the other people with the same country as you.
  5. Go to your country’s page and save it in your area, so we have a record of what the page looked like before. Use the format “WikipediaJapan-Jane”. It is best to save as html-only format, but any other format is okay. “Web Archive” format is not recommended.
  6. Look at the headings and decide what you want to add (e.g. Food, population, arts, music, important places)
  7. Only add things that are relevant to all users worldwide.

Write your work in a Microsoft Word Document.[change | change source]

  1. For this project, you must write and save in a Microsoft Word file, in case something unexpected happens.
  2. Open and Save a Microsoft Word Document with the format “MyText-Japan-Jane.doc”.
  3. Add the text. You may use parts of your project provided you wrote it yourself. You may not use parts of your assignment copied directly from another source.
  4. Use short sentences. Use simple words.
  5. Use short sentences.
  6. Use short sentences!

Add references to your Microsoft Word file.[change | change source]

  1. Write your references on a new line after the sentence it applies to.
  2. You should put a reference for the facts that you post. This is so that readers can check that it is correct. The more specific or unlikely the fact, the more important it is to put a reference. Try to refer to the most reliable books and websites you can find.
  3. Your reference should include as many as possible of the following. For our purposes, write each item separated by a full stop.
  • Author’s or authors’ name(s). This can also be the name of an organization (e.g. “Australian Bureau of Meteorology”).
  • Title of book or website.
  • City of publication (books only)
  • Book publisher (books only)
  • Year
  • “Retrieved from http://[Internet address] on 13 September 2010.” (for websites only)
  • Page number (printed material only)
  1. Examples:
  • i. John Abraham. Guide to Sri Lanka. Colombo. Travel House. 1999. p.75
  • ii. Australian Bureau of Statistics. 2006 Census Australian Data. Retrieved from http://www.abs.gov.au on 13 September 2010.

Paste your information into Wikipedia.[change | change source]

  1. Log in.
  2. Go to your page.
  3. Choose whether you want to edit: (1) the entire page, (2) a large section or (3) a small section or paragraph
  4. Click “Change” at the top to edit the whole page.
  5. To edit a section, click “change” on the right hand side in line with the heading.
  6. Copy your text from Microsoft Word.

Add references[change | change source]

  1. Put the cursor in the correct place.
  2. Click the “Reference” button (it looks like a book). Copy and Paste in your reference information.
  3. If there are no footnotes yet: Type <references/> at the bottom of the article’s text (if it’s not there already), above the extra information. This makes your footnotes appear.

To Format Headings[change | change source]

  • Main heading:

=Culture= =Geography= =History=

  • Large section heading:

==Languages== ==Arts== ==Festivals== ==Food== ==Clothing== ==European settlement==

  • Smaller section headings:

===Music=== ===Dance=== ===Harvest Festival=== ===New Year Festival=== ===Desserts=== ===The First Fleet===

  • Minor heading:

====Folk music==== ====Popular musicians==== ====Pavlova==== ====Vegemite==== ====The First Fleet’s arrival at Sydney Cove====

Finishing your Editing[change | change source]

  1. Write a summary. Write the section you changed, and what you put in. Then click the "Signature and Timestamp" button (the blue pen)

Example: /* Culture */ Added Festivals & Music ~~~~#If your change is only a few letters or a spelling/grammar correction, check the “This is a small change” box

  1. Press the “Show Preview” button to check for errors. Get a teacher to check.
  2. If it’s okay, press “Save Changes”

Watchlist[change | change source]

Each day, someone will check the changes our class has done, to make sure they are appropriate. To check our watchlist, log in and click “Watchlist” at the top of the page. Any change we have made will appear.

Finally[change | change source]

We hope you enjoy doing this project. Take care, as what you write can be seen by anyone around the world. Have fun!
