Jeremy Robert McClean, (born January 4, 1985, in Toronto, Canada) is a Canadian racing driver that competes in Formula One. He debuted in 2010 with Renault, and still races there today. He raced in the IndyCar Series between 2004 and 2009, winning the championship four times (2005-07, 2009), and having driven with Panther Racing and Chip Ganassi Racing.
Career[change | change source]
Pre-Formula One[change | change source]
Early Life[change | change source]
Jeremy had a great interest in the sport since the age of five, when he tried out go-karting at a local track. At the age of ten, he won many races and the national title of "Canadian Go-Kart Champion."
CART[change | change source]
Jeremy got his first start in American Open-Wheel racing with the backmarker Valvoline Team. The team was already undergoing financial troubles. He got his first start in the Miller Lite 250, when he retired about a quarter-way through when crashing into another car along the pit straight. He got another start Bridgestone Grand Prix of Monterey Featuring the Shell 300 in Laguna Seca, once again retiring, but due to a transmission problem.
After being laid off for two races due to sponsorship issues, Jeremy got a start at the Molson Indy Toronto, and drove what is considered "a miracle race" as he drove to 11th place, the team's first two points in CART. After retiring from Cleveland and Vancouver in seperate incidents (with Vancouver's having a conspiracy as the steering wheel appears to turn the right way, but the car veers the opposite direction). He was then laid off again because he was very inconsistent with his racing, although three out of his four retirements thus far were not his fault. After another two races, he got his final start in the Molson Indy Montreal, where he drove to 7th place, beating the likes of Michael Andretti. Unfortunely, he was laid off a third time due to sponsorship reasons, and Jeremy "ran away from CART and never returned." During his one-year hiatus, an urban legend says that Jeremy was Paul Tracy's tea boy, although Jeremy never confirmed nor denied this claim.
IndyCar[change | change source]
After leaving Team Green, McClean signed with Panther Racing "on a whim." However, McClean impressed on his debut, placing Second. He gave the team their first win and them some, winning five times overall. During the Indianapolis 500 in 2004, he led two laps but nearly went out due to suspension problems, then rebounded to place fourth. That would be the reason why McClean lost the championship, as he lost by a mere five points.
Set out to rebound his misfortunes in the season, he won six times in 2005 (including three in a row at one time) and won the 2005 IndyCar championship. After signing with Chip Ganassi's team, McClean wound up repeating in 2006 and 2007, both times in dominating fashion. The 2008 season was considered a "train wreck" in McClean's career, only winning three times, and placing fourth in the overall standings. Despite this, he was linked to Renault (even getting a test drive at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix), but he then found out that the best seat would have been in reserve, so McClean passed the drive. McClean said in an interview in early 2010 that he "probably could have gotten a seat in mid-2009," but "probably would have been schmucked after that." However, despite a slow start to the 2009 season, he would up winning four times in five races (considered by fans "the best they've seen) and wound up winning the championship in the last race, nearly winning it, but gave the win to Dario Franchitti, knowing "he would still have a future in the IRL." As it turned out, Franchitti won the 2010 IRL title. He called Franchitti "the real deal," and knew that he should have at the very least, gotten a drive for Minardi.
Formula One[change | change source]
2010[change | change source]
McClean's F1 career started out well, despite a retirement due to a suspension problem in Bahrain, and a rain-affected event in Australia, but scored 8th in Malaysia and 5th in China. In Monaco, he drove despite having suspension problems all race and finished 9th (originally 10th without Schumacher's penalty at the last corner). He drove very well in Turkey, finishing third after the "Red Bull Chaos" which Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel crashed into each other. At Silverstone, though, McClean drove brilliantly to take the victory. Meddling points finishes would follow, though he finished 6th in Singapore and Abu Dhabi, holding up championship contenders Webber and Fernando Alonso.
2011[change | change source]
McClean once again had a slow start to the season, but has recovered by scoring 7th and 6th in China and Turkey.
