Kurdbasar [1] [2] (also known as Azerbaijani Shepherd Dog, Shepherd Dog, Sheep Dog, Wolf and Alabash ) is a local dog breed in Azerbaijan mainly for comfortable management of the sheep herd.

Distribution[change | change source]

This breed is mainly in Azerbaijan and originated there. Especially in the Karabakh region: Fuzuli, Gubadli, Lachin, Kalbajar regions, as well as farms in Guba, Khizi, Shamakhi, Ismayilli, Gadabay, Lerik and Gazakh regions; they are mainly kept in pastures and winters. They are suitable for both mountainous and flat terrain.

Initially, Kurdbasars were used to protect Azerbaijani caravans, flocks of sheep, houses and land. They are distinguished by their loyalty to the owner and his family but not to strangers. Their high physical performance and loyalty lead them to protection. Thus, they are mainly used to protect herds from wild animals.

They have a medium and large body structure. Root and elastic skin form a bulge in the neck. It matures at the age of 3. Dogs aged 15 and over are considered long-lived.

They have a muscular finish. The lower jaw is wide open and well developed. The noses are large and mostly black. The ears are directly proportional to the eyes. Teeth are well developed. They have white teeth. They have a strong neck.

Males are 72 cm tall and females are 66 cm tall. The former weighs 52 kg and the latter 42 kg.

The history of dog fights in Azerbaijan dates back to antiquity. The battles were organized especially on holidays. Dogs are specially fed for this purpose. Ears and tails are cut off to minimize the weak points of dogs in combat. This operation is mainly performed when the dogs are still puppies. These battles still exist today. [3] [4] Fans of dog fighting can be found in almost every region of Azerbaijan.
