Claudine Hermann, born in 1945 in Paris, is a French physicist and professor at the « École Polytechnique ». She is the first woman appointed to a teaching position in this school in 1992. She is the honorary president of the woman and science association that she co-founded in 2000 and the president of the European platform of woman scientist since September 2017.

Training and professional Courses[change | change source]

She was a student of « L'école supérieur normal de jeunes filles » aggregated by physical apperance (1969) she supports in 1976 a thesis of sciences entilted “Optical pumping in the antimoniure of gallium: optical detection of the electronic echo” at the Paris VI university and obtains doctor title of State in sciences. Specialist of physical appearance of solids her works concerned the optical pumping in semi doctors the photo-broadcast of polarized electrons and the optics in close field. She is an assistant at “L'école Normale Supérieur”

Before being recruited as a lecturer in “Ecole Polytechnique” (1980) where she was a professor in 1992. From 1980 to 2005, she is tutor of the physics lab of the condensed material. She becomes very good professor in 2005.

Commitment and institutional responsibilities[change | change source]

Claudine Hermann Study the situation of the scientific women in Western Europe. Girl of pharmacist her wonders about the influence of the job by the mother and by the job by the father in the vocational guidance of the girls. She tries hard to incite the girls to invest scientific activities by realizing conferences and by publishing articles. Claudine Hermann wants « Leurs donner d'autres exemples que l'inaccessible Marie Curie ». Following his appointment as first woman teacher of physical apperance to the « Ecole Polytechnique », Claudine Hermanngets acquired with women's deficit in the scientific sectors, and makes a commitment in instutitional actions.

She participates in the pioneer studies which manages Huguette Delavault (1924-2003) and the association « Demain la parité », on the place of the girls in the scientific prepatory classes ( 1997), then in the scientific named school (1988). She is a co-author of an report: ”Les enseigants chercheurs à l'université: la place des femmes” with Noria Boukhobza, Huguette Delavaults and Françoise Cyrot-Lackmann.

In 2000, Claudine Hermann is a member founding and first president of the association “Femmes & Sciences”, created with Huguette Delavault, Françoise Cyrot-Lackmann, Françoise Gaspard, Colette Kreder and the association “Femmes & Mathématiques”. She is right now the president of honor there.
