There are different types of stev:

Of the gamlestev that have not been lost, most of them are from Setesdal and Vest-Telemark .
Some gamle-stev might be part of folk songs, where the rest of the folk song has not been handed over, from generation to generation .
In Telemark , ny-stev have been replaced by rural folksongs , to a great degree. By contrast, ny-stev in Setesdal have held much of their ground.
- om-kved [3] are similar to refrains in ballads .<br.> ( Inn-stev [4], etter-stev[5], mellom-sleng [6] and etter-sleng [7] are different types of om-kved. )
- slåtte-stev [8] are instrumental dancetune songs
- herme-stev [9] contain apologetic proverbs (also known as Wellerisms ).
The people who can perform stev
[change | change source]A person who can perform a stev, is known as a kveder ( a type of artist ) . <br.> Of these artists, Aslak Brekke is possibly the most prominent , of those who who have been recorded .
A kveder from Setesdal, when performing stev, generally sings more slowly, than a kveder from Telemark. [ref 5] <br.> One reason for this, may be that the text of Setesdal stev, are often more meditative ( or elegiac ) . [ref 5]
