Category:Roads in Michigan[change source]

Your move of Category:Roads in Michigan to Category:State highways in Michigan was incorrect. An interstate highway like Interstate 194 (Michigan) is part of the Interstate Highway System, and is not a state highway, even if is only within one state. Kk.urban (talk) 23:39, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Kk.urban: Interstate Highways are owned by the states. In Michigan, they are fully part of the State Trunkline Highway System. They can be considered a subtype of state highway, but yes, they are fully state highways owned and maintained by MDOT. Imzadi 1979  23:41, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't think that who maintained it was relevant to what kind of highway they were. I've always seen Interstate highways, U.S. highways, state highways, and county roads marked separately on maps. I'll ask for more input on enwiki. Kk.urban (talk) 23:43, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Kk.urban: if there were more articles, I'd suggest creating subcategories of that category for Interstate Highways and one for U.S. Highways (note the capitalization on both, it matters). There are no county roads there, but they'd be in a different category separate from this one. Imzadi 1979  23:49, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, do you consider all highways in the US to be state highways? Kk.urban (talk) 23:49, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Kk.urban: if your question is do I consider all roadways owned and maintained by a state department of transportation to be a state highway, yes. That includes all Interstate Highways and all United States Numbered Highways (aka US Highways). Those two classifications can be considered subtypes of state highways. Sadly, we don't have a term for a "state highway that isn't an Interstate or US Highway", so the term can be ambiguous.
If a roadway is owned and maintained by a county, even if it's termed a "county highway", it is not a state highway. Imzadi 1979  23:58, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How can a layperson determine if a road is maintained by a state department of transportation? Is there a list somewhere? Or on enwiki? Kk.urban (talk) 00:01, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Kk.urban: well, in Michigan's case, it's very simple. If the highway has an I, US or M designation, it's a state highway. (The Capitol Loop is also a state highway.) MDOT publishes a map called the Truck Operator's Map and marks every state highway on it, even unsigned state highways. (In Michigan, business routes are also state-owned, but that may not be the case in other states. So Business M-28 is also a state highway, as is Business Loop I-75.)
The formula is very similar in the other states. Other states may have maps or logs or other documents listing their inventory, but the concept is the same. Imzadi 1979  00:07, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We need to be able to categorize for all 50 states, or people won't know which edits are correct or not. Does that mean that I-5 is a state highway in California, Oregon, and Washington? Kk.urban (talk) 00:10, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Kk.urban yes, it is. Legally, I-5 in California is State Route 5 in the Streets & Highways Code. US 101 in California is legally SR 101 as well; the state does not differentiate the different designation types and legally codes them all in the statute as state routes. Following up on myself, yes, I-5 is a state highway that meets Interstate Highway standards and was given an Interstate Highway number by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and the Federal Highway Administration, or their predecessors. It is owned by the state departments of transportation of three states.
US 101 is a state highway that was granted inclusion in the United States Numbered Highway System by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. It is owned by the state departments of transportation of three states. Imzadi 1979  00:34, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
