Violet Evergarden (ヴァイオレット・エヴァーガーデン, Vaioretto Evāgāden) is a Japanese light novel series. It was written and drawn by Kana Akatsuki. The series was published from 2015 to 2020 by Kyoto Animation. It won the grand prize in the Kyoto Animation Award in 2014. This was for novels. This was the first time something had won a grand prize in the Kyoto Animation Award.[3] Kyoto Animation released the first book on 25 December 2015. They released it under their KA Esuma Bunko company.[4] An anime television series based on the novel series came out between January and April 2018. An original video animation episode came out in July 2018. A spin-off film came out in Japan in 2019. A second anime movie, Violet Evergarden: The Movie came out in September 2020.

Anime
[change | change source]The light novel was made into an anime. It was first announced in a commercial in May 2016.[11] In June 2017, Kyoto Animation said that Anime Expo, AnimagiC, and C3 AFA Singapore 2017 would show the world premiere of the first episode.[12] The second episode was shown at 2 anime events on October 21, 2017.[13] The third episode was shown in 5 theaters in Japan on December 10, 2017.[14] The anime was aired for 13 episodes in Japan. It went from January 11 to April 5, 2018.[15] An original video animation episode was shown on July 4, 2018.[16] The series is directed by Taichi Ishidate at Kyoto Animation. It was written by Reiko Yoshida. Akiko Takase made the characters and Yota Tsuruoka made the sound.[17][18] In January 11, 2018, Netflix showed the series. In Netflix, the series was shown worldwide, except for the United States and Australia. In those countries, the series wouldn't be streamed until April 5, 2018.[19][20] Anime Limited bought the series for home video in the United Kingdom and Ireland. They showed the first episode at the MCM London Comic Con on October 28, 2017.[21] Madman Entertainment bought the home video rights for the series in Australia and New Zealand.[22]
Movies
[change | change source]A spin-off movie, Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll (ヴァイオレット・エヴァーガーデン 外伝 - 永遠と自動手記人形, Violet Evergarden Gaiden: Eien to Jidō Shuki Ningyō), was first shown on August 3 in an Anime convention in Germany[23] and in Japan on September 6, 2019. The movie was directed by the show's series director Haruka Fujita.[24] In the credits, the movie shows the names of the people who were killed in the Kyoto Animation arson attack.[25] Madman Entertainment was allowed to show the movie in Australia and New Zealand. They first showed the movie in theaters in Australia on December 5, 2019. Then, they first showed the movie in theaters in New Zealand on December 12, 2019.[26] In early 2020, Funimation showed the movie in theaters.[27] Anime Limited showed the movie in the United Kingdom and Ireland on March 1, 2020, at the Glasgow Film Festival.[28]

The series' soundtrack was called Violet Evergarden: Automemories. The soundtrack was made by Evan Call. On March 2018, Bandai Namco Arts under the Lantis label released the music. It has 47 tracks and 6 vocal tracks. It has performances by Aira Yuuki, Minori Chihara, and True.[29]
