Resurrection[change source]

Per the suggestion I am asking for some community input on this one. I believe we have addressed the valid objections, and the prior discussion is in the archive on the top left of this page. Added technical issues[change source]

I've now added an explanation of the issues that can occur with revision histories when importing. I've tried to explain it as simply as I can, but it's pretty rough and I welcome any improvements and copyedits. It was done with guidance from Graham87 and Brion Vibber. I'll ask them to look over it for any inaccuracies it may have.

I never tried to import a page that had a history already. When there was a page like that, I've seen it be deleted first, have the next one imported over, and then the old history undeleted (which seemed to make them blend seemlessly). Hmmm, that's an interesting thought. As far as I know they retain the same numbers, but I'm sure I've done a few history merges where there's been no problems like you say. I'll definitely have to test that theory out. Will get back to you. Osiris (talk) 09:33, 22 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that works too, but make sure there are no overlapping revisions in the resulting page history if at all possible. In cases like that on the English Wikipedia, I import the edits into the MediaWiki talk namespace, move the target page of the imported edits to where the edits were just imported, undelete the relevant imported edits, then move the target page back to its original location. The main advantage of my method over the method discussed above is that the page ID of the original page is preserved. I'm a neat freak so I'm obsessed with that kind of thing, but your mileage may vary; I believe the only time that the page ID is important to regular users is in the "what links here" page, where it determines the order of entries. Upload import is disabled on most Wikimedia wikis, but this wiki has elected to allow bureaucrats to assign and revoke the flag if needed.

@Leaderboard checking Special:Import shows I can import from en, wikt, b, and q which correspond to English Wikipedia, Simple English Wiktionary, Simple English Wikibooks, and Simple English Wikiquote, even though the last 2 are closed (they can still be imported from).
