A macron ( ¯ ), from the Greek μακρόν (makrón), meaning "long", is a diacritic mark placed above a vowel.[1]
Usage [change]
In the romanization of Japanese, a letter with macron represents a long vowel.[2]
- For example, in the Hepburn romanization system
- kōtsū (交通) means "traffic"
- kotsu (骨) means "bone" or "knack"
In the written Hawaiian language, the kahakō is shown by a macron.[3]
