Introduction[change source]

This is a new introduction that I propose:

A Scanner, or computer scanner is a device which is used to convert printed images or text into a digital image.

Please give your thoughts on this, and say whether you think it should be used. --DJDunsie (talk) 17:39, 9 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The problem with this that you also use a scanner for irises, or fingerprints; in that context simply saying scanner may be confusing...--Eptalon (talk) 21:52, 9 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That is a good point. How should we rephase the sentence so it covers this? Any suggestions? --DJDunsie (talk) 16:54, 14 April 2011 (UTC) Having said this, the article is Image scanner, not just scanner. The en.wiki article does not talk about these 'special' scanners. --DJDunsie (talk) 18:47, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well there are used in biometry. It is basically the device capturing a fingerprint, or device doing a retina scan; I could go on, you could probably also talk about scanners when talking about hand geometry (another biometric trait...)...--Eptalon (talk) 21:48, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you're right.I know there are lots of types of scanners. That was not my point. We should perhaps have an article for entitled just Scanner. Here we should write about all the kinds and give a general definition, etcetera.

A scanner is a device which 'scans' objects and creates a copy of the image in another, usually digital, format. Examples of scanners are image scanners, iris scanners and fingerprint scanners.

Please don't get angry. I was not saying you were wrong and I am sorry if it seemed like that. I am only, after all, trying to help.--DJDunsie (talk) 18:57, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know what to do then. DJDunsie (talk) 13:32, 2 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have changed the article so it reflects your comments, which I agree with. One other thing is that scanner redirects to here. On en, it is a disambiguation page, which I think is more appropriate because it caters for all the different types which you mention. Should we create the page here too? I have changed Scanner from a redirect to a disambiguation. Please reply if you have a problem. Thanks, DJDunsie (talk) 11:27, 30 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
