Tokyo (東京市 Tōkyō-shi?) was a Japanese city in Tokyo Prefecture in 1889 through 1943.[1]

In 1869, the city of Edo was renamed Tokyo, which means "Eastern Capital".

In 1869, the offices of Tokyo Prefecture were opened.[1]

In 1943, the city was abolished and merged with Tokyo Prefecture to form the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.[1]
