Overview[change | change source]

The seven-arrow icon of the Mother of God is an icon of the Mother of God revered in the Russian Orthodox Church . The celebration of the icon takes place 26 [O.S. ] августа

The prototype of the icon comes from the Toshen Church of St. John the Theologian in the vicinity of Vologda on the banks of the Toshni River. According to legend, the icon was found by a peasant from Kadnikovsky district, who found it in the bell tower of a church, where they walked on it, mistaking it for a board. The icon became especially famous in 1830, when cholera was raging in Vologda. After 1917, the icon disappeared from the Church of St. John the Theologian [3] .

Currently, the icon is in the St. Lazarus Church in Vologda. The icon began to be located in this temple since 1945, after the Great Patriotic War [4] .

The icon has ancient origins (19th century publications indicate that it is at least 500 years old [5] ). The image was painted on canvas pasted onto a board, which allows us to date it to the 18th century (it may have been made from an unknown image of the 17th century) [3] . The Virgin Mary is depicted pierced by seven arrows.

The iconography is similar to the icon of the Mother of God “ Softening Evil Hearts ” or “Simeon’s Prophecy”, which has its own characteristics - three swords (arrows) are located to the left and right of the Mother of God and one below. Both icons are currently considered varieties of the same iconographic type [3] .

Believers ask before the image for reconciliation between the warring parties and deliverance from hard-heartedness .
