Translation of the week

There is something called the Translation of the week. I know that the goal is to create the article over all WikiMedia projects, but is there anything else specific I should know about it that happens here? Thanks, RyanCross (talk) 14:38, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What do you mean by "specific"? Do you mean a Wikimedia event (so to speak) that happens here? Chenzw  Talk  14:41, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. -- RyanCross (talk) 14:47, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, there was the Board of Trustees election, but it is over now. Other than that, I don't think we have any other Wikimedia events that have coverage here. The only frequent cross-wiki issues are banned users coming here from EN to cause more trouble. Chenzw  Talk  14:51, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Thanks. I don't really know much about what the Wikimedia project do here. -- RyanCross (talk) 14:58, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hurricane Erika (2003)

Ohai. I was wondering if you could help me simplify Hurricane Erika (2003). I'm still working on it, but I could use your help. I may even try to get it up to WP:GA if it's ready. Can you help? -- RyanCross (talk) 09:02, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, User:Gwib, User:The Rambling Man, and me have been making improvements to baseball uniform and have (I think) fulfilled all the requirements for WP:GA (see here). Do you think it would pass WP:PGA? i would really like your thoughts about it. Thanks, RyanCross (talk) 04:25, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Random Portal

I have someone off IRC trying to fix it. --  Da Punk '95  talk  11:04, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I was wondering if you could do me a favour. I created a page at Celtic FC and would like to move it to the correct title at Celtic F.C., but there is a page there already. I am not able to view the Celtic F.C. article because of WebMarshall restrictions (I mean that my browser blocks the page because it doesn't recognise the suffix (F.C.) - .html / .php etc is allowed. So, could you delete Celtic F.C. and I will move Celtic FC to it. Or, could you change it over? Hope you know what I mean. Thanks ← κεηηε∂γ (talk) 13:00, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem! ^^ Chenzw  Talk  13:12, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Counter

Hi, I updated your vandalised counter. I did not vandalise your page however. But by updating the counter without vandalising your page, that in itself, is actually vandalism. Therefore making the counter update valid. Know what I mean? ← κεηηε∂γ (talk) 13:41, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Well, technically it was vandalism, but then it was a good faith edit as it changed the counter to be correct, so then could not be vandalism... so was a false edit and thus was vandalism, but then it was a good faith edit as it changed the counter to be correct, so then could not be vandalism... so was a false edit and thus was vandalism, but then it was a good faith edit as it changed the counter to be correct, so then could not be vandalism... so was a false edit and thus was vandalism, but then it was a good faith edit as it changed the counter to be correct, so then could not be vandalism... so was a false edit and thus was vandalism, but then it was a good faith edit as it changed the counter to be correct, so then could not be vandalism..."

Hm, 1709? I'm not sure what that stands for. And your welcome. :) -- RyanCross (talk) 09:01, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

GA?

Hi Chenzw. I was reading over this and I think it is ready for !voting. I'm not sure if your experienced in the GA areas, but could you read over the article and tell me if you think !voting would be good at this time? Thanks in advance! :) -- RyanCross (talk) 06:10, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am not very good at rating articles, but this article has the potential to be a GA. When voting starts, I am not so sure. Chenzw  Talk  06:15, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks anyway. Oh, and I was wondering what you meant by the "1709" user. Is that a coding you use to point out specific users? I'm not really experienced with things like that. Could you tell me what that is? Thanks, RyanCross (talk) 06:17, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A month ago (I think), there was a vandal that repeatedly replaced pages with "1709". Blocking of individual IPs didn't help. In the end, a large range was blocked (see WP:AN), but the vandal used open proxies. Seems to have died down, though. Chenzw  Talk  06:21, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see it. :P Hm, isn't that an IP? Ips cannot be blocked indef since they change from time to time, and they don't have a user name. :P Am I missing something here? -- RyanCross (talk) 06:34, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
True, IPs can't be blocked indef, but policies don't state that we can't re-block after expiry :D In addition, as the IP of the vandal changes from time to time, it is necessary to block a huge range (block all smartphones running Opera Mini). Chenzw  Talk  06:37, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that IP has been quiet for a while anyway. I don't see a reason why to re-block when their causing no harm to Simple English Wikipedia now. If that IP does start vandalizing again (which I highly doubt since it's almost been a month ago the IP last vandalized), a huge range block might be necessary. Or am I still missing something here. :P -- RyanCross (talk) 06:41, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(unindenting) Yes, you are :D The range was blocked for one month (so it didn't vandalise). And just yesterday, Creol re-blocked the range. Chenzw  Talk  06:50, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I see. :P Just one other thing, you told me this: "I am thinking of blocking him as having an unacceptable username.". Uh, how does an IP have an unacceptable username? That's crazy. :P I'm sure I'm missing a lot of things at this point. :D -- RyanCross (talk) 06:54, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
While the discussion was going on at WP:AN, there were socks created by this vandal with "1709". After blocking and blacklisting anything that contains "1709", that user (or so it seems) appeared as 17O9. (captial "O") Chenzw  Talk  06:57, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
First, how many times do you change your signature a day? I see like 5 different colored signatures of yours in this section. :P Anyway, I'm pretty sure the 1709 IP is that 17O9 user. And I don't see how that violates WP:USERNAME. Maybe WP:SOCK (since I'm pretty sure that's the same user), but the user name isn't inappropriate. And the user name hasn't caused any vandalism, unless it is blocked right now. -- RyanCross (talk) 07:04, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
He has been blocked by Creol for abusing multiple accounts (checkuser?). True, a more precise reason will be that. My signature uses a parser function that changes the colour according to the number of changes on the wiki. Lights was the first to use this, I adapted his code. The code is here. Chenzw  Talk  07:06, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that's all I needed to know. Thanks, RyanCross (talk) 07:14, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Side point here: Some of the vandalism said to be done by the 1709 vandal was not done by him. Many of the proxy edits done to look like him were traced back to another pair of vandals. The same is true for Simple11. Actions were taken to deal with Simple11 and that situation seem to have been solved a while ago - more recent actions were not them, but other vandals impersonating them. -- Creol(talk) 07:24, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there. You have email. Cheers, -- RyanPublic (talk) 03:43, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My sig still leaves behind a trail of coding. Sorry to bug you, but can you fix it? --Gwib -(talk)- 15:05, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You (Chenzw) only fixed the first half - the link to the user page, but the link to the talk page still left coding as it was using a random colour template which didn't include the SUBST:... I've included this template so it is now fixed (I think - Gwib, sign here)- tholly --Turnip-- 15:43, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
--Gwib -(talk)- 15:45, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like it works. But do the colours vary? --Gwib -(talk)- 15:46, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, it works on the sig page, but doesn't like the SUBST, let me have a fiddle... - tholly --Turnip-- 18:03, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sign again, I think it is working. If you want, I can simplify all the code I made during the testing, but it does no harm on that page. - tholly --Turnip-- 18:57, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

IP's creations today

Ohai. I'm sure you've noticed that the IP has been creating many articles today. Gwib deleted some of them because it was said they weren't notable. The discussion is at the bottom of his talk page. Some of them had only less than 3 sources. What do you think? -- RyanCross (talk) 01:09, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request

Hi there. Can you please tell ONaNcle what a stub is. He/She doesn't seem to get what they are, and ONaNcle is just going to start more edit wars which are frowned upon. Oh, and could you delete Move, the redirect. It clearly is a bad choice a title of a redirect as it can be it's own article. -- Ryan†Cross (talk) 10:53, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

Hi Chenzw. I was looking at Theboooo's talk page and notice you have blocked him for vandalism. Could I ask out of interest, which one of his contribs are vandalism? I saw one at Wikipedia:Student tutorial‎, which was maybe good faith, dunno. Obviously the latest ones to TRM and your pages, but those were done after your warnings. Infact, somehow after your block? Sorry, I'm not questioning your block, he does deserve it now anyway, but I was interested to know where his vandalism was...? And how he managed to vandalise your, and TRM's page after the block? Regards Kennedy (talk) 12:45, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, most of his vandalism was deleted. How did he vandalise after being blocked? That is impossible. :P You must have been mistaken. Chenzw  Talk  12:55, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
But wouldn't it still show in his contribs? I admit, I don't understand it, but by the times on his talk page and the times of his edits, it looks like he has made edits after he was blocked? Is it perhaps the times? Daylight saving? GMT/UTC? Dunno... Kennedy (talk) 13:07, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ya, if you looked at your computer's clock (in GMT), it would be DST. Contributions that are deleted will only be made available to admins. Chenzw  Talk  13:10, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah great, another silly issue caused by my computer :P Thanks anyway :) Kennedy (talk) 13:36, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Signature

May I ask, why does your signature change from red to green and then back again from time to time? Minor or Prime 09:17, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, it uses a function that changes the colour according to the number of changes that have been made to the wiki. You can take a look at the code here. Chenzw  Talk  09:21, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Is it that its one colour when you made an odd number of changes and another when you made an even number of changes? I don't understand the code. Minor or Prime 09:24, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think the colour is changed according to if the number of edits is a multiple of 1, 2, 3 or 4. I don't understand the code fully either. :P Chenzw  Talk  09:25, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, just curious. Minor or Prime 09:29, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Short(-ish) explanation on how the code works: It takes the total number of edits to the wiki, divides that number by 5 and then takes the remainder (ie 1023/5 = 204 remainder 3). The remainder will be between zero and 4. It then looks at its list and substitutes the signature that is set for that number. Each number (0, 1, 2, 3, 4) is set to a signature with a different color. -- Creol(talk) 10:42, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wow... Complicated. Does any other user use this? Minor or Prime 10:46, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Gwib had it set for a while on a much larger scale and based on the time (60 colors - one for each second) but I think he stopped using it. Microchip8 has/had the large version on one of his secondary accounts for also. -- Creol(talk) 10:49, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Razorflame and Lights have it too. Chenzw  Talk  11:08, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Really? Thiers are not so obvious. Your signature is just one color while thiers are quite colorful. Minor or Prime 11:09, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have the code too but I also change the name from Static, Falcon, or StaticFalcon. StaticFalcon -=Electrify My Thoughts=- 14:13, Monday August 18 2008 (UTC) 14:13, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(unindenting) Wow, the yellow is too bright. Can you make it a bit darker? Chenzw  Talk  14:16, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's one of the colors. Falcon -=Electrify My Thoughts=- 14:17, Monday August 18 2008 (UTC)

Create an account

Another way, instead of unblocking, is to simply create the account by asking him/her for the email and account name (provided that it's not a hard block, IIRC). Ryan and I did that for 89.241.238.164 (talk · contribs), who was caught in an IP block range that Gwib declined to lift. Cassandra talk 06:42, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see. So, what should I do? The person affected has already been told to create his SUL account over here. Chenzw  Talk  07:47, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. I didn't realize that Kirrages was an SUL account and was trying to create it here. The username/password trick won't work there, then; it'll reject any attempts unless the SUL password is provided. Sorry about that. Cassandra talk 07:50, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Moving Pages

How do you move pages here on Simple English Wikipedia? It keeps on telling me that I do not have the appropriate permissions to move pages... Beefball Talk 18:30, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's strange. You should be autoconfirmed already, so you should be able to move pages. Are you editing through Tor? If so, the requirements are stricter; you need 90 days and 100 edits. Chenzw  Talk  08:37, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Unless you're trying to move a page to a page which already exists. Then you'd need to be an admin to delete the target page. The Rambling Man (talk) 08:52, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like I can only move pages if I log on through a secure server. Any ideas? Beefball Talk 13:30, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Now that's very strange. Wikipedia does not have any restrictions that I know of on Singapore. Hopefully someone will pop by this page and help you with this. Sorry. Chenzw  Talk  13:45, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
On the move page, it says that "the page will not be moved if there is already a page at the new title, unless it is empty or a redirect and has no past edit history." Maybe that's what's wrong. --Gwib -(talk)- 13:53, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I get "You do not have permission to do that, for the following reason: You do not have permission to move pages on Wikipedia." Any Suggestions? Beefball Talk 14:29, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(unindenting) I really don't know. However, your account will be 100 days old soon (8 more days); you could try again after that. Chenzw  Talk  01:14, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ogre from Helms Deep rapes Prince Alexander

This revert against censorship has to make me wonder..

In late 1300 the current king of Norway came out of the closet as an homosexual. This shortly resulted in a brutal rape and murder of the prince Alexander. The king claimed that the violent act were performed by an Ogre that traveled from helms deep to Norway for salvation.

—IP editor, Norway

The current king of Norway came out of the closet in 1300? Raped and killed Prince Alexander (while there are many, En:wp's page does not show any from Norway or in the 1300's) and then blamed it on an Ogre from one of the main battlegrounds from J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth? I am pretty certain that was vandalism.. and the IP you reverted for censorship was just reverting it. (and a later user reverted another IP for trying to fix it as well.)-- Creol(talk) 18:09, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
