I've discovered Hotcat. Very cool -- America †alk 03:37, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Ryan, I've been working on this article a bit, and I was wondering if you could take a look and tell me if the level of English used is OK for Simple English WP. I'm not really used to this place, as you can probably guess. :-) Cheers, —Giggy 09:41, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From thoroughly reading through the article, I see no problems. The article seems simplified in it's current state. I did spot a minor issue though. If you read the first sentence of the lead and the first sentence of the history section, they are basically the same thing. Try rewording it a bit and see how it looks and sounds. Other than that minor issue, the article is looking good so far. Try getting it up to WP:GA, k? ^_^ -- RyanCross (talk) 12:04, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that, will keep at it. :) —Giggy 06:02, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

16 Days

Are you sure you've been here for only 16 days and you're already so established? Maybe you just didn't update the userbox? Prime Contributer (talk) 10:40, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Exactly which userbox are you referring to? And are you saying that I am a established editor? :) RyanCross (talk) 10:51, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but that wasn't the main point. I was referring to the user box on your user page. Prime Contributer (talk) 11:19, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but I don't see which one though. Can you point out which userbox you are referring too? You can just copy/paste the text in it here. -- RyanCross (talk) 11:23, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The second user box, the one stating how long you have been in Simple EN Wikipedia, with this in it: This user has been on Wikipedia for 16 days. Prime Contributer (talk) 12:22, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The userbox updates itself everytime it hits 0:00 (UTC). If you look here, I created my account on June 14. Today, it is June 30 which means I've only been here for 16 days. -- RyanCross (talk) 12:27, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, you are really fast to get involved! I would really call you an established user (now this is the main point). How come you're so quick to get experienced with everything? You were at the EN Wikipedia, perhaps? Prime Contributer (talk) 12:38, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the compliments. :) Well, yes, I do edit the English Wikipedia, under a different name though (I don't want to give it out just yet ;)). I know a lot from en-wikipedia that I use here. Reverting vandalism, writing articles, ect. But I've got used to the policies and how everything works here. It is a bit different from en-wikipedia, but I like it here. -- RyanCross (talk) 12:43, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Good to know that. I got blocked from the EN Wikipedia, somehow, when I'm sure I didn't vandalise. Prime Contributer (talk) 13:59, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You can always request an unblock. I can probably see what happened if you showed me your account there. -- RyanCross (talk) 14:11, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have an acount there. Prime Contributer (talk) 10:18, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Baseball uniform

I don't mind it being there to be honest, but it is a little off-topic, so expect comments to be raised at the GA. I'll review it thoroughly later today, and make sure I know what GA criteria are, and then I'll let you know if I think it's ready. Biggest issue for me is that not everything is referenced, but I have a feeling the GA criteria don't necessarily require that to be the case. More later. The Rambling Man (talk) 10:44, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, no worries. I'll find some time this afternoon. The Rambling Man (talk) 10:53, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi RyanCross. You nominated Maltese people for {{pgood}} over two weeks ago. Are you going to move it to the voting section or should I archive it? Thanks. The Rambling Man (talk) 18:54, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nintendo DS-only games

Thanks for helping, but I don't think that games like SM64DS qualify, since while they are distinct for new controls and/or new content, they're also based on previously existing games. - A Link to the Past (talk) 03:49, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Independence Day!!!!

Half-Blood Prince

The anonymous user is exactly right. Wikis are a source of information. As we say on en, if you're looking for information on the book, you're going to be spoiled. I'm going to write out a plot, in the meantime, I would appreciate it if you could apologize to the anonymous editor. Dumbledore is gay, though this isn't said in any of the books, and he does in fact die in the end. Edits were rough but did not warrant removal. Thank you, Cassandra 06:55, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also, penultimate is correct (second-to-last), though it is very complex, and should not be used here; that warrants an explanation, not the popups summary. Cassandra 06:56, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I didn't know that he is gay. Most edits that mention "gay" is usually vandalism, but in this case, I didn't know about the subject to know it wasn't. As per the talk page edit, I thought it was just a nonsense edit as per the edit the IP made to the article. This is all my mistake. And yes, I will apologize. -- RyanCross (talk) 06:58, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RE: IRC

/Me is frustrated because I can't get my computer to work for IRC right now... ditched you again. -- America †alk 01:51, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I've seen that you've moved the {{stub}} below the other templates. I've always thought that it should be above massive and rather distracting templates. If you think it should be below, please explain (I don't want to be reverting each other's edits). Cheers -- America †alk 05:47, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've been told on en-wikipedia, by an administrator, that {{stub}} should always be right above the categories of articles. I don't know if Simple does the same thing, but I'm pretty sure they do. -- RyanCross (talk) 06:54, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

stubs

Yeah, good question. I don't think there's a specific reason other than initially the number of articles being created was so small it wasn't really necessary to categorise the stubs further than just, well, "stub". As the Wikipedia grows it'll be more relevant I guess. Did you have any suggestions for sub-categories? The Rambling Man (talk) 07:26, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I just wondered if you thought we needed more specific stubs now and if so, what they should be? The Rambling Man (talk) 07:39, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome to ask me as many questions as you like! As for how come you report more vandals and have a higher edit count rate than most, well I'm guessing you spend a lot of time logged in and watching "recent changes" like me. As for a limit on admins, no there isn't one. People tend to think we don't need more bureaucrats (which is probably true - there aren't many RFAs, renames or bots on Simple English), we still have sufficient vandalism and creation of nonsense pages to warrant more admins. You could consider yourself for the position but I would get at least two months more experience before attempting anything. In the meantime, let me know if I can help with anything else! The Rambling Man (talk) 07:58, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think what Gwib says makes sense. A lot of people here are used to Simple English Wikipedia being a quiet and tranquil place, quite the opposite to English Wikipedia. I've been involved in plenty of conflicts over there, and resolved them all through communicating and most definitely assuming good faith. It's difficult to find conflict here right now so it's going to be a challenge for you to show other editors that you can be cool under pressure and deal with conflict well. However, keep sticking around, something's bound to crop up! And stick around the admin noticeboard, the simple talk etc, who knows what may happen? The Rambling Man (talk) 08:12, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well I think it's a matter of being patient here. With so few contributors, feedback is slow in coming through. If you'd like more specific help with any article (like the baseball uniform one) then feel free to give me a shout! The Rambling Man (talk) 08:28, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thanks for helping me with adding the periodic table templates. :) --TBC 05:08, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, your welcome. There seems to be many pages that needed the template, so I decided to lend a hand and help. ;) Anytime. :) Thanks, RyanCross (talk) 05:11, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summaries

Yes, of course it's a good thing. I have my settings ensure that I enter one, but I'm so used to doing it now that it's second nature. It's important to help everyone see what you've edited and why you've edited it. It often comes up at RFA so keep up the good work! The Rambling Man (talk) 09:05, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, it's frustrating. You'll just have to wait until you succeed at RFA, then you can rollback all you like! Before I had that, I tended to use pop-ups on the history and select "Revert" which had pretty much the same effect. The Rambling Man (talk) 09:16, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, en-wiki has a similar principle of allowing non-admin closure of AFDs. Have a look over there and see what they say - I think the same general approach should be applied here, so, if memory serves, yes you should be able to close clear-cut "keep" RFDs. The Rambling Man (talk) 09:29, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Going along with the old "be bold" thing, I'd suggest closing RFD's whenever you feel a safe and significant consensus has been reached. The Rambling Man (talk) 09:41, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I think it's a daunting process as it is, without having a set of mandatory questions to answer. At the moment, the traffic at RFA here is small so there's not much need to ask the basic questions which over at en-wiki tend to sort the wheat from the chaff pretty quickly. I think the RFA process here needs to encourage editors to ask questions, but shouldn't necessarily mandate them. The Rambling Man (talk) 09:58, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You're very welcome. The Rambling Man (talk) 10:04, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Our Main Page

As I said here, I love the new Main Page! It even makes Charles Spurgeon look better there. I probably should let this go, but I really don't like what you said, it wasn't that important and we all knew you had been the designer, he just wanted to add some links. But no big deal. And about IRC, I'm not sure if I'll be able to get on it. Very good job on the Main Page, I think it's better than EN:WP! Cheers -- America †alk 19:30, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Hi thanks a lot for the barnstar. My goal is to eventually get the Oklahoma page looking pretty good. I’ve done some work to it, taking parts from the English Wikipedia and simplifying them. I haven’t had a lot of chances to get online this summer due to work but by about August I should be back to it. Thanks again for the barnstar--CPacker (talk) 05:47, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Striking

Why did you strike the sentence about my many deleted edits? I keep on claiming 10% of my "Main" edits are deletion ones no matter whether I was using the blanking (mostly) or QDs (28 times) procedure. ONaNcle (talk) 07:41, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, the following is what I striked: "You have many deleted edits, which is good, but try bringing that up. I'm just curious of what those deleted edits are.". The reason why I striked this was because it's not entirely good if you have many deleted edits that are not QD requests. User:Creol checked your deleted edits (I can't since I'm not an administrator) and found only 28 QD requests. I wouldn't call that you have many quality deleted edits, so I striked my statement about that. -- RyanCross (talk) 07:46, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Far from your 28 assumption ;-))) my overall deleted edits has reached the symbolic one hundred mark today. But you have the excuse not to know because you're not an admin and please remind that if you deserve more than me to be soon elected it's not a reason to keep such a strong opposition against more ancient (2004) contributors like me. ONaNcle (talk) 18:22, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

!voting

Well I'd say go for it. Most of the time the articles don't get seriously looked at until the voting starts. It'll sit at the vote for a week and you'll need five supports minimum and overall 70% support. Then it'll be promoted, hopefully! The Rambling Man (talk) 10:14, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry about it. Continue to edit the way you do, you're not doing anything wrong. The Rambling Man (talk) 10:20, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. I should be on some tomorrow, I'm not going that far (you know) for church. I got injured a few days ago; was crushed when me and friend could not get our go-cart to stop (it has no brakes). I had my foot out on the ground to try to slow it, and was slammed into a metal gate (because I was still sticking out of the cart). It fully stopped the thing, completely crushing my mid-section. I wrote out a story about it, very painful. Anyway, cheers -- America †alk 03:52, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WP:SNOW

While I do support WP:SNOWing that RfA, only Crats can close RfA's for any reason, except for pure disrution. I am reverting your closure. Just wait for Creol or Vector to come in. --  Da Punk '95  talk  22:14, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Going to agree here. Were it an admin (or possibly Rflame - ie. senior editors) snowing it, that could fall under being Bold, but still not entirely their place. Will it most likely get snowed? yep, likely in the morning when I am more awake unless one of the others gets to it as many of the admins and all that tend to always support (Vector is support happy at times and Majorly supports as often as I oppose but neither have really had a chance to notice this yet -Vector may have) have not had a chance to chime in yet and should get that chance before any action is taken. I would prefer to always give everyone a chance (chance, not going to wait forever though) to comment before shutting down a long time account like this. Were it a first day/week account, sure, no problem. But as this meets the basic requirements for request, a little more time should not be a lot to ask.
Although, the infighting keeps up on it, that time gets cut shorter - people vote oppose or support for whatever reason they decide. Any reason is valid as it is their opinion and their criteria about who they can trust. The closing 'crat is the one who has to take the hit for deciding if the general opinion of both sides supports the act of making that person a sysop. This tends to favor opposes as many supports are just +1s as opposes actually state why this is a problem. 20 "Yeah, He'll be great"'s vs 15 "I don't think so and here is a 5K article about why" and the 15 tends to be greater than the 20 when they make a strong and valid argument backed up with proof. Heck, 20 to 1, if that one has adequate proof he can win but the crat is in for one hell of a fight to support his decision and others may overturn it. -- Creol(talk) 07:34, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, thinking twice on it, it would be nice for more editors to have a chance at !voting in RfAs of users such as this one. And yeah, I do agree that an RfA with 100 supports that are like, say "Good user", and 10, reasonable opposes backed up with reasoning, would generally fail, depending on what the bureaucrat thinks the consensus is. Anyway, thanks Croel for your very civil statement. I understand now. Best, RyanCross (talk) 07:52, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merge tags

Given the complete emptiness of most talk pages, it's not surprising that there was never any discussion. I think BOLDNESS here is called for on an even greater level precisely because of the lack of discussion. Cassandra 04:04, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm saying you should probably make a decision – something like "I don't think we should merge" or "merged" since it's very unlikely that someone will actually strike up a discussion at a later point. Cassandra 05:04, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Making new templates

Hi, is it possible to make new templates? And if yes, are there instructions somewhere? Peterdownunder (talk) 07:39, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, anyone at anytime can make new templates. You can create them like your creating new articles, just add "Template:" first. More information can be found at WP:TEMPLATES. Thanks, RyanCross (talk) 07:46, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Television Ban

Hi, I don't understand what you mean by the note you left for TV Ban. There wasn't any QD tag there. Prime Contributer (talk) 11:04, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Prime (can I call you Prime? :P). There actually is one. Look at the diff. I removed the QD tag that was used as {{QD|INFO HERE}}. -- RyanCross (talk) 11:29, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm now "Minor" by the way. Anyway, I didn't see that, I'm very sure I visited that page a few minutes before you made that edit. Minor Contributer (talk) 10:49, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hehe, I liked "Prime" better. :( Anyway, thanks for the note. Best, RyanCross (talk) 10:52, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It might be temporary, until my exams are over, then I might start creating more pages. Minor Contributer (talk) 10:55, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Human

Hey! I've got a favour to ask, can you copy edit/expand Human a bit for me and when you are done give me your opinion on whether or not I should put it up for GA. I added about four new sections (Psychology, War, Religion, Technology, Art, Music and Literature) although Psychology is rather short. Cheers. The Flying Spaghetti Monster! 21:27, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Um, I've been copyediting Human. Did you check the history? It's not ready yet, it still has a lot of copyediting to do. -- RyanCross (talk) 21:29, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well I did notice you had done a bit but I just wanted the newer bits checked over really and I wondered if you knew about them. Cheers for all your help! The Flying Spaghetti Monster! 21:43, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there.

Hello there, RyanCross. Looks like you've been pretty busy on this site recently :) That's good to know that there will be someone following in my footsteps to pick up the pieces that I have left behind :) Keep it up! Cheers, Razorflame 06:45, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nice to see your back editing, Razorflame. Yes, I'v been pretty active. But Razorflame, I think you should pick up your own pieces. You may have dropped some, but I bet you can bend right back down and grab them back up again. Don't give up picking them up, keep on trying. If I drop some pieces, I'll pick them up myself. I don't need help, trying to pick up what I may have dropped, and you shouldn't either. Get back on that track, and don't give up. Don't give up! -- Ryan†Cross (talk) 08:14, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Eh? Which pieces would those be? I have no recollection of losing some pieces :) Cheers, Razorflame 10:31, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'm just saying, basically, don't give up on simple wikipedia, and becoming an administrator. Sure, adminship is no big deal, but if you really want to be one, if you truly want to help the community better with a few extra buttons, then don't give up. Just don't be too eager for it. ;) -- Ryan†Cross (talk) 10:59, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think that I am all that eager anymore :) I will just bide my time :P Cheers, Razorflame 11:03, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Electronics

Hi Ryan. Just a quick note to let you know that I made Category:Electronics a sub-category of Category:Video game consoles‎ so it doesn't need to be added to each individual article. Hope that makes sense! The Rambling Man (talk) 09:14, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I didn't notice that. :P Thanks for the note, and good to see you here. :) -- Ryan†Cross (talk) 09:18, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Optimal classification changes

Please ask questions about any sentences you feel need to be simplified and I will go to work on it. Julie Dancer (talk) 10:21, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

....

Heh...that's what happens when you edit two Wiki's simultaneously. It's happened to me on Wiktionary as well. :) --TBC 05:36, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Main Page

Hi, the main page still looks a bit strange compared to the previous version. Any suggestion? I don't know much about code. Minor Contributer (talk) 10:46, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Userpage redesign request

Like Useight's, but with green background and white type. Same header, same "Stuff", same "Associates". Basically a carbon copy. Sebb Talk 12:45, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No... sorry, but your user page is way too empty. I'm buys as it is anyway. Sorry, but I'll get to your review though. :) -- Ryan†Test (talk) 12:49, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How about now? I can wait whoever long it takes. Sebb Talk 13:03, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I can't do anymore renovations Sebb. I'm busy as it is. ;) Maybe another time. Oh, and thanks for the short review. I forgot to put the notice down that was on top of my talk page. :P -- Ryan†Test (talk) 13:05, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I'll ping you again in a few months. Sebb Talk 13:43, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Adminship

I'm surprised that you aren't an admin yet. You've got great credentials, and you seem to have a good grasp on all of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If you want, once you get near the 3 month mark (you're already half way there!), I'd be happy to nominate you.--Tree Biting Conspiracy (talk) 13:13, 26 July 2008 (UTC) (meant to comment with my actual account, this global user unifying thing's been messing me up, since you can't unify different usernames)--TBC 13:14, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hehe, that's not the first time I've heard that. No it's okay. I have to be here for at least 3 months since that's suggested in our criteria for adminship. I've only been here for, let me think... 1 month and 12 days I believe. I'm flattered, but it's just too early for me to try an RfA. I might let you nominate me in a few months though. But like i said, it's too early. Thank you very much though. :) I'm just running out of room of nominators. <_< I wouldn't want to many nominations. Best, Ryan†Cross (talk) 13:26, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, did you change the wording of your offer a bit? Now my reply sounds odd. :P I'll just revise it. Sure, I'd be happy for you to nominate me. :) Hehe, just use your main account. ;) I just hope I don't get too many nominators... And don't worry, I know the policies and a lot of what administrators do by experience. :) -- Ryan†Cross (talk) 20:13, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, realized you were only half way to the three month mark moments after posting my comment, so I quickly changed it. :) Regardless, you have been doing a great job, keep up the good work.--TBC 20:25, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dates

We actually don't want commas. No commas allows a user's date preferences to work. Cassandra 21:46, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, my fault. It just seems almost all of our articles have commas in the dates, so I thought that article should be the same. Sorry. By the way, Cassandra, did you want me to nominate you for adminship soon? I'd be happy to, but if you don't want to, that would be just fine with me. :) I wouldn't want to push you into something your not comfortable with yet. -- Ryan†Cross (talk) 21:56, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I said a couple of hours ago (I've been thinking about it for a few hours) that I would accept a nomination when you felt I was ready [1] Cassandra 21:58, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I didn't see that. I was probably offline. Thank you. :) Keep it up! ;) -- Ryan†Cross (talk) 22:02, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Review

Thanks ever so much.
I'm just also trying to balance creating an encyclopedia with a spirit of kindness and community.
If this is a big problem, i will stop. Sebb Talk 01:23, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
i know. i wont overdo it.
I'm working on trying to turn Scranton, Pennsylvania into a good article, but my prose sucks.
Can you copy-edit it later? Sebb Talk 01:27, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
