The 2016 Northern Territory general election was held on 27 August 2016 to elect all 25 members of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly. It was conducted by the Northern Territory Electoral Commission (NTEC).
The incumbent Country Liberal government, led by Chief Minister Adam Giles, tried to win a second term in government. However, they were defeated by the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader Michael Gunner, in a landslide. It was a wipeout loss for the CLP, who lost all but two seats. Giles became only the second Chief Minister in Northern Territory history to lose their seat at an election. It was the first and only time that Labor won seats in the cities of Alice Springs and Katherine, which normally vote for the CLP.
