The arrondissement of Tarbes is an arrondissement of France. It is part of the Hautes-Pyrénées department. Its capital, and of the department, is the city of Tarbes.

It is the northernmost of the arrondissements of the department, with an area of 1,488.1 km2 (575 sq mi),[1] the second in area of the department. It is the most populated arrondissement with 143,341 inhabitants and a population density of 96.3 inhabitants/km².[2]

When the Hautes-Pyrénées department was created on 17 February 1800, the arrondissement of Tarbes was part of that original department and was made the capital (préfecture) of it.[3]

Geography[change | change source]

The arrondissement of Tarbes is bordered to the north by the Gers department, to the east by the Haute-Garonne department, to the south arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre, to the southwest by the arrondissement of Argelès-Gazost and to west by the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department (Occitanie).

After the reorganisation of the cantons in France,[4] cantons are not subdivisions of the arrondissements so they could have communes that belong to different arrondissements. In the arrondissement of Tarbes, there are 10 cantons with all its communes in the arrondissement:

The canton of La Haute-Bigorre has 13 communes in in the arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and 1 in Tarbes, the canton of La Vallée de l'Arros et des Baïses has 38 in Tarbes and 33 in Bagnères-de-Bigorre, and the canton of La Vallée de la Barousse has 1 commune in Tarbes and 51 in Bagnères-de-Bigorre.
