Dambulla (Sinhala: දඹුල්ල Dam̆bulla, Tamil: தம்புள்ளை Tampuḷḷai) is a town in the north of Matale District, Central Province of Sri Lanka. It is the second largest town in the Matale District. It is 148 km (92 mi) north-east of Colombo, 43 km (27 mi) north of Matale and 72 km (45 mi) north of Kandy. The city has a famous vegetable market.

It was also known as Dhamballai. It was ruled by Kings like Raja Raja Chola and Rajendra Chola when they were kings in 900-1000 AD.

Dambulla Cave Temple[change | change source]

It is the largest cave temple in Sri Lanka. The rock is 160 m (520 ft) high. There are 153 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings and four statues of god and goddess including 2 statues of Hindu gods Vishnu and Ganesh. The walls of the caves have Buddha's story.
