|The Simple English Wiktionary has a definition for: data.|
Originally, data is the plural of the Latin word datum, from dare, meaning "give". Datum is rarely used in English. So data often gets used as if it were a singular word. Some people like to say "data are", not "data is".
Data virtualization[change | change source]
Data virtualization is a way of gathering data from a few sources in a single layer. The gathered data layer is virtual. Unlike other methods, most of the data stays in place, and is queried on-demand directly from the source systems.
