The 2007 500 had gotten its design off of the 2004 Fiat Trepiùno concept car. Its looks remembered of the 1957 500, which was a lot smaller than this one. First photographs of the 500 were shown on March 20, 2007, and the car itself was shown to the public in May 2007, with production starting in July 2007.

The 500 was mainly built in Tychy, Poland, but also in Mexico for the North-American market. A stylish, while unique hatchback, in Europe it competed with the Toyota Aygo and Peugeot 108. It came in a convertible version called 'Fiat 500C'. Petrol engines had 2 or 4 cylinders, and there also was a 4-cyilinder diesel engine. In its last 4 years, the car was a mild hybrid with a 3-cylinder engine. For the US market, an electric version was produced. Under the brand name Abarth, the 500 was offered as a high performance car.

In 2024, production ended.
