James Alexander Philip Theo Mountbatten-Windsor, Earl of Wessex [1][2] (born 17 December 2007) is a member of the British royal family. He is the youngest child of Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh.
He was born at Frimley Park Hospital in Frimley, Surrey. He is the youngest grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and a nephew of King Charles III.
From his birth in 2007 until 2023, he was called Viscount Severn
Titles
[change | change source]From his birth in 2007 until 2023, he was called Viscount Severn. In 2023, when his father became the Duke of Edinburgh, James started using his father’s lesser title, which is Earl of Wessex. When addressing him directly, he uses Lord Wessex.
James is legally a prince, as he is the grandson on a male line of a monarch. His parents decided he will be styled as the son of an earl, not a prince. When he turns 18, he will have the choice to use his princely title, which is likely.[3]
