The Killing of Nahel Merzouk was the shooting by a policeman of a 17 year old youth in a Parisian outskirt that led to protest. When police wanted to check his car, he was shoot dead at close range on a public highway. The police lied and claimed self-defense.
What shocked the country was a video captured by a passer-by that was posted on social media after the big media houses reported only the first police version of the incident. The video showed the policemen had lied. Protests erupted across France. The President said the incident was inexcusable and unforgivable and the National Assembly observed a minute for silence of Nahel.
The protests lasted more than seven days. The incident caused discussions about racism and police violence.
