Leopold "Grundl" Grundwald (28 October 1891 – 9 April 1969) was an Austrian football player in the position of striker and later football coach. He played for SK Rapid Wien and in the Austrian national football team.
Career[change | change source]
Leopold Grundwald came to Rapid in 1907 and was in the fighting team from 1910 onward. From 1911–12, Grundwald was one of the cornerstones of the first Austrian championship team as a left winger and left connector and also contributed to a total of seven championship titles with numerous goals. In 1919 and 1920 he also won the Cup. From 1911 to 1921, Grundwald played in 112 championship games for Rapid, scoring around 50 goals. He was also used as a defender, especially in the last few years.[1]

Grundwald was in the Austrian national team eight times and scored three goals. His first match was a 1-0 win over Norway on 1 July 1912. His last match was on 1 October 1916 in a 3-2 away win against Hungary.[2]

After the end of his active career, he also worked as a coach for FC St. Gallen, and a referee.
