MediaWiki talk:Invert
This needs to be short and simple. The least amount of words needed to get the point across would be best. (Show changes not in this namespace) or (show changes to every namespace but this one) is concise and simply put. The arrow thingy may be a little overkill though. Putting a label next to a box should be enough for then to understand the label goes with the box (especially when it is the only box in sight for the most part)-- Creol(talk) 18:55, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
- I can't think of a way to properly explain what the box does without using complex words or long sentences. The box doesn't only exclude edits in the selected namespace when ticked, but also excludes edits in all namespaces except the one that is selected when it is unticked. - Since the box is normally unticked anyway unless you tick it (if that is the right word for 'put a check mark in it by clicking it'), I think it is better not to explain all that.. It's potentially confusing, I had to re-read your above sentence about five times myself before I got your point. All we have to do is explain what happens when you do tick it. I thought the arrow might be overkill though. I actually didn't know at first if "Invert choice" would invert the choices of showing / hiding bot edits, anon edits etc. as well, but apparently it only applies to the namespace choice. So it's good to be clear. Another thing, it doesn;t work if you choose "all" namespaces, but I don't know an easy way to explain that either. Blockinblox - talk 21:21, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
- Including what it does when it isnt clicked just seems a little odd to me. It would be like saying "Press this button to do <this>. If you do not want to do <this>, then do not press the button". While we don't want to overestimate our users, I could only hope they would figure out the "if you don't want to do it, don't press it" part on their own. Sometimes you just have to let them experiment a little bit with the buttons rather than handing them instructions on every possible senerio we think they could come up with on how to push the button (or not push it.. ) -- Creol(talk) 21:30, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
Can we please agree or disagree on this, which fits on one line, doesn't have unnecessary brackets, and is not ambiguous? J Di 16:30, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
+"this" or "the"
[change source]Huji suggested adding "this" or "the" to the sentence. I think adding "this" is a good idea (although it makes the 2nd "this" in the sentence sound a little funny). I'm going to change it but I'm open to changing it back or to something different if anyone else thinks it makes it sound too weird. Personally, I think it sounds a little strange but is acceptable.
