Mojang Studios is a Swedish video game developer which started in Stockholm. It was created by a stand-alone video game maker called Markus Persson in 2009 and was called Mojang Specifications. It was created for Persson's sandbox and survival game called Minecraft. The studio's name came from one of Persson's older projects that he left two years ago. After the game's release, Persson and Jakob Porsér formed a business called Mojang AB in late 2010 and hired Carl Manneh for the chief executive officer. Other people were hired like Daniel Kaplan and Jens Bergensten.

Minecraft became very successful, soon becoming the best-selling game of all time. Wanting to move on from Minecraft, Persson wanted to sell his part in Mojang, and the company was given to Microsoft through Xbox Game Studios(back then know as Microsoft Studios) in November of 2014. After that, Persson, Porsér, and Manneh left Mojang, with Jonas Mårtensson becoming the new chief executive officer. In May of 2020, Mojang was rebranded to become Mojang Studios
