The Montenegrin–Ottoman War (1852–1853) started after the Ottoman Empire retaliated against Montenegro for secretly helping rebels in Herzegovina.
Background
[change | change source]In 1852, Danilo, returning from Russia, declared himself "Prince of Montenegro and the Hills," changing Montenegro from a theocracy to a principality. Although Montenegro was still an Ottoman vassal, the Ottomans attacked after Montenegro's secret support for the Herzegovinian rebels was revealed.
