Poplar is a mainly residential district of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in East London. It is about 5.5 miles (8.9 km) east of Charing Cross.

Poplar includes a part of the Canary Wharf, the Poplar Dock, as well as the Lansbury Estate and Chrisp Street Market. The area gets its name from the black poplar tree, a large and locally rare species. It thrived in the wet conditions which the River Thames and River Lea once brought to much of the neighbourhood.

The district became the Metropolitan Borough of Poplar in 1900. In 1965, it merged with the Metropolitan Boroughs of Stepney and Bethnal Green to form the new London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Poplar is served by Poplar DLR station on the Docklands Light Railway.
