On May 24, 2022, a mass shooting took place at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, United States, when 18-year old Salvador Ramos shot and killed 21 people.[1][2][3][4] Of the people fatally shot, 19 were students and two were adults.[4] Earlier that day, Ramos reportedly shot and critically wounded his grandmother.[5]

The attack was the deadliest school shooting in Texas history,[6] the deadliest mass shooting at a U.S. elementary school since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012, the deadliest U.S. school shooting since the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in 2018,[7] and the 9th deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.[8]

Background

The school had about 600 second through fourth grade students in Uvalde. The majority of the students were Latino.[9]

The school district had many security measures at the time of the shooting, including four officers working within the school district and a security staff.[10]

Shooting

The shooter is said to have entered the school at around 11:30 a.m. CDT.[11] Police say the shooting began two minutes later, and according to a Facebook post by the school, the school was put on lockdown at 11:43 a.m. in response to gunshots in the neighborhood.[12]

U.S. Border Patrol agents began shooting at Ramos after responding to the shooting. Ramos fired back until being shot and killed by a patrol agent.[13]

The children killed were from 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade with ages ranging from aged 7 to 10.[14]

The shooting came less than two weeks after a mass shooting in Buffalo, New York that killed ten people.[15]

Aftermath

U.S. President Joe Biden addressed the nation on the night of the shooting and said: "As a nation we have to ask when in God's name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby...I am sick and tired of it -- we have to act."[16]

Former presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau released statements.[17][18]
