Should or Shouldn't

Unclear sentence

This sentence in the first paragraph of the article is unclear to me: "Unlike the latter two, where the former drives from the other, however, Arabic is itself a root language, like Latin." Does it mean that Hebrew and Aramaic come from a different branch in the language family tree than Arabic? Maybe it's better to just say that these languages come from the same language family?
