Complex language[change source]

Hello, all. I have recently made this article on Lahore's famed Heera Mandi red light area, which has major and rich historical and cultural connections. However, I have been advised the article's language is rather difficult, and complex for simple Wiki users. I tend to agree with this and feel that at a number of places the structure is indeed rather complex and difficult and I shall gradually keep on working on it, as on other articles. I do keep reading the basic 'How to write Simple English' instructions here, but these arent always helpful. I would also welcome any senior and experienced editor's help, please. Many thanks, Hamneto (talk) 01:16, 24 September 2014 (UTC)Hamneto[reply]

hi @Hamneto The article is very informative. If we just take a few steps to simplify the article, it will fit in better here at Simple English wikipedia. One important thing is to not use compound sentence. For instance if a sentence says "Mary always wears a red dress, and she always goes to the market on Saturday." You would take out the and and make two shorter sentences. "Mary always wears a red dress. She always goes to the market on Saturdays." Just try to have one thing going on in each sentence.

Look out for the compound words to let you know it is probably a compound sentences. Words like, "and, but, when, since, or, if and because" are some words that will give you the clue that it is a compound sentence. Then just break down the sentence in two or three short sentences depending on the info in the sentence.

Also some complex words need to be be changed to simpler words. A few I see in the article could be changed to simpler words:

originally ---> first

shift ---> change

A list of simple words can be found on this page here. [1]

Also a thesaurus is good to help choose a different word, and then you can pick the simpler words for the articles. A good online thesaurus can be found here. http://www.thesaurus.com

Try a few of these suggestions, and I will be glad to go back over the article to help you simplify it.

Dear Carriearchdale, thank you so very very much! I am most grateful for your help and after reading the above note and also reading the changes made here, i see how vastly improved and simplified the article is, by simply making some basic changes ie (a) shortening sentences and removing complex constructions and (b)a simpler re organization. I shall certainly keep this in mind and try to follow this now onwards. Sincere regards, Hamneto (talk) 12:30, 24 September 2014 (UTC)Hamneto[reply]
