In 2012, the editing team worked on a study saying that taking responsibility for reversions improved new user retention. They found that using active voice, taking responsibility ("I reverted your edit" instead of "your edit was reverted") was better. If I may direct your attention to the very bottom of page four, they have three example texts and an explanation of which one worked best. I think that could be useful here. In response to your description...
The way this bot works, does it recognize test edits automatically or does a living person activated it one message at a time? Darkfrog24 (talk) 22:59, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Darkfrog24: That’s not what I meant. I used that edit summary to describe making it sound a little more personal and less like a bot welcome. Sorry for the confusion! --sithjarjar666 (my contribs | talk to me | email me | see my enwiki profile) 23:15, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That is not where I was going with this. You see, in the paper, the researchers found that making the message more personalized helped. Could the bot say, "My name is SimpleEditor and I reverted your edit" and "I saw this was a test edit and not an attempt to make trouble. Here is the correct place to make test edits: your sandbox!" The study said that "I reverted your edit" had better results than "your edit was reverted." But it depends on whether "I" is a person or a bot. Darkfrog24 (talk) 23:35, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Darkfrog24: Very likely a person, unless someone makes a bot. The reason I wanted to make this template is because there is a similar one on en.wp, and it might be helpful over here. To answer your question: A human, not a bot. --sithjarjar666 (my contribs | talk to me | email me | see my enwiki profile) 23:38, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent. Is there a way to design the bot so that the human can enter their name? "Hi, my name is Darkfrog24 and I reverted your edit. Don't be intimidated because I'm so handsome..." Darkfrog24 (talk) 23:40, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Darkfrog24: (Um, stay on topic please...) You keep asking about a bot as if I can just pull one out of my pocket. I honestly have no idea how to make a bot... --sithjarjar666 (my contribs | talk to me | email me | see my enwiki profile) 23:43, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Then what's... Oh, I see. I was using the wrong word. This is a template, not a bot. Okie-dokie. Can the template be designed so that the human being using it can enter their username so it shows up as "Hi, I'm Darkfrog24, and I reverted your edit because..." Darkfrog24 (talk) 23:45, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
@Darkfrog24: Yes, that should be very possible with a “subst:REVISIONUSER” command. Much more possible than creating a bot! Do you want me to make that change? --sithjarjar666 (my contribs | talk to me | email me | see my enwiki profile) 23:47, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I think the person's name and active voice would improve it.
I've been assuming that you don't want anyone else to change the template until you say it's ready. Darkfrog24 (talk) 01:04, 23 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Darkfrog24: I think it’s ready. Do you know who develops Twinkle over here? I want to ask them if they can put this template in there, under the “welcome” section, under the subheading “problem user templates”, just like it is on en.wp. --sithjarjar666 (my contribs | talk to me | email me | see my enwiki profile) 15:17, 23 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Can't help you there. I don't think I've ever used Twinkle on any Wiki. Darkfrog24 (talk) 20:32, 23 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Darkfrog24: That’s fine. I could probably ask at Simple Talk or something... --sithjarjar666 (my contribs | talk to me | email me | see my enwiki profile) 20:41, 23 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
