From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Conversion to Sanamahism (Meitei: Onba, Old Manipuri: Onpa) is the process by which non-Sanamahists adopt the Sanamahi religion and become members of the Sanamahist community. It resembles both conversion to other religions and naturalization. Generally, religious conversion to Sanamahism is done by the Meitei people who were Hindus, Christians or Buddhists. It is refered to as resurrection of the ancient ancestral religion because Meitei people were once ethno-religious to Meitei religion (officially known as Sanamahism) before 18th century AD.

On 2nd September, 1944, 11 leaders held a meeting at the residence of Lukram Anganghal Meetei (son of Lukram Leeklai) at the region of Wangkhei Thambalkhong in Imphal, and unanimously resolved two decisions, which are to quite the then practising religion (Hinduism) and to embrace the ancient Meetei religion (Sanamahism) as well as to try to propagate and promote the Sanamahi religion.[1]

In the early 20th century AD, Maharaja Okendrajit, the then King of Manipur, converted to Sanamahism from Hinduism. So, the royal temple (Govindaji Temple) separated from the palace and established a managing trust of its own.[2]

On the 16th of April, 2021, Shumang Kumhei artists Sougrakpam Hemanta and Yumnam Nilachandra adopted Sanamahism in a function at the Lainingthou Sanamahi Laishang.[3]

On the 21st April 2022, Laishram Ranglila and Logjam Rajen, the two renowned comedians of Manipur, converted to Sanamahism, in the presence of Leishemba Sanajaoba, at the Lainingthou Sanamahi Laishang, Hayingkhongban Uphong Yumpham located inside 1st MR campus in Imphal West.[4][5]
