Bull Race[change | change source]

Earlier, Biyyam Kayal was famous for Kalapootu ( Bullock Race)[8]. Rows of Bullocks will be taken round and round to churn the earth and they will race at fairly good speed. Men were either allowed to stand on the levelling plank or watch as spectators. The levelling plank stand was dangerous as many men have gotten injured when the bulls have thrown them out[8]. The lords ( as they were called earlier) or the participants used cattle of good breeds for the Bullock races.[8] This was encouraged by group of spectators who would gather around with drums and music to encourage the game.

Biyyam Kayal Park[change | change source]

The park attracts many visitors especially during weekends[9]. The park is also surrounded by a number of stalls, where snacks and drinks are available for the tourists. The park is spacious and have many seating arrangements. A wide variety of migratory birds can also be observed in the Park[10]. Purple moorhen ( Porphyrio porphyrio) is one of the resident water birds of Kerala observed near the Biyyam Lake.[10] They are found by their breeding displays and loud calls.[10]

Boat race[change | change source]

The canoe race that takes place annually during Onam is characterised by the presence of different type of canoes known as Churullan vellams.[6] They are the traditional paddling canoes as compared to the snake shaped boats usually seen for the Boat race that occur in Kerala[6]. It is a local event and gets a footfall of over 25,000 people per year[6]. The events take place in the following order- it starts off with the inaugural ceremony, then the Jala Ghoshyatra, which is followed by the boat race consisting of 15-20 people in one boat and it ends with cultural performances and traditional music, much to the entertainment of the crowd.[6]
