The Guardian Legend (ガーディック外伝, Gādikku Gaiden, Guardic Gaiden) is a video game made by Compile in 1988. It is played on the Nintendo Entertainment System. The player controls a half-human half-robot woman who must destroy a large alien planet before it reaches the planet Earth.

The game is the sequel to an older video game named Guardic, a game played on the MSX. This game is popular because it has two genres: action-adventure gameplay and shooting like Xexyz and Sigma Star Saga. Like Metroid, the game stars a female as the main character.

Plot[change | change source]

In The Guardian Legend, the player controls The Guardian-a transforming cyborg. Players must fight through the alien planet Naju. They must turn on the planet's self-destruct device and escape before it reaches Earth. Once that happens, the alien planet explodes, and Earth is saved. To help players along, messages left by an unknown person help guide them in finding safety switches to turn on the self-destruct device. These messages also help players unlock some rooms.

Gameplay[change | change source]

Sometimes in the game, players will be walking on the planet in a human form. Other times, they will turn into a spaceship where enemies must be destroyed in the air. The player has a life meter that goes down when the player gets hit by an enemy or an enemy bullet or missile. When that life meter runs out, the Guardian explodes and dies, and the game ends. Players can shoot at enemies with a regular gun and a specialized gun that can do different things. They can also upgrade these guns during the game. Players can find power-ups everywhere that can refill their life meter and ammunition.

History[change | change source]

The Guardian Legend was made for the Famicom and came out in 1988 in Japan. It came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America in 1989 and in Europe in 1990. The people who created the game were the same who created Guardic, Zanac, and Puyo Puyo.

Reviewers liked the game for its multiple features. Some have compared the game to other Nintendo games like The Legend of Zelda and Metroid.[1] Mike Engler, who made Retro Game Challenge, said that "The Guardian Legend is one of the best games ever released".[2] The game was nominated by Nintendo Power magazine in 1989 for "Best Graphics & Sound", "Best Play Control", and "Best Overall" but did not win any of them.[3] Some of the music of the game were remixed.
