ZFS is a file system that has been developed by Sun Microsystems for Solaris. It was developed with very large disks (and disk collections) in mind. It has built in support for snapshots and logical volumes.-The file system also supports advanced concepts like RAID. In addition to Solaris, ZFS has been ported to other versions of Unix, including Linux and FreeBSD. FreeBSD and Solaris use ZFS as the default root filesystem. Ubuntu ships with ZFS available in its kernel, although it is not the default for the root filesystem.
