At 5:30am on 13 June, 31-year-old Valdo Calocane, who is an immigrant from Guinea-Bissau, was stopped by police whilst he was driving the stolen van. He was tasered and arrested.[4] On 16 June, he was charged with three counts of murder and three of attempted murder.

Two people killed in the attack were 19-year-old University of Nottingham students.[5][6][7] The third victim was a 65-year-old man. The killer stole his van. He then used it to drive into three people at a bus stop.[4]
