A caldera is a volcanic feature formed by the collapse of land after a volcanic eruption. In a huge eruption the volcano's magma chamber may empty enough for an area above it to drop.

The term is similar to 'volcanic crater'.[1] The word caldera comes from the Portuguese language, meaning "cauldron".
