West is one of the 4 main directions on a compass. West is normally to the left on most maps. Iran is west of Afghanistan, Thailand is west of Vietnam, and Greece is west of Turkey. Australia and the countries in western Europe and North America are usually called the "West." The sun and moon set in the west. Europe and other lands with strong European cultural backgrounds such as the United States are often called "The West".
