The Women's Tennis Association (WTA), formed in 1973 by Billie Jean King, is the principal organizing body of women's professional tennis. It organizes the WTA Tour, the worldwide professional tennis tour for women. The WTA's counterpart organization for men's professional tennis is the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP)..

The WTA was formed in the month of June 1973, and is able to trace it's beginnings back to Houston, Texas, with the first Virginia Slims tournament, which was organized by Gladys Heldman and held in September 1970. The WTA gives out awards every year for players who have done well during the season.
