The arrondissement of Avallon is an arrondissement of France. It is part of the Yonne département in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. Its capital is the city of Avallon.

When the Yonne department was created on 17 February 1800, the arrondissement of Avallon was part of that original department.[2]

Geography[change | change source]

The arrondissement of Avallon is bordered to the north by the Aube (Champagne-Ardenne) department, to the east by the Côte-d'Or (Burgundy) department, to the south by the Nièvre (Burgundy) department and to the west by the arrondissement of Auxerre.

It is the easternmost arrondissement of the department, with an area of 2,209.2 km2 (853 sq mi).[3] It has 47,594 inhabitants, the arrondissement of the department with fewer people living there, and a population density of 21.5 inhabitants/km².[4]
