Black Mask is the name of two fictional Batman villains from DC Comics who have a black skull and a black suit who in some cases is a crime boss leader.

Fictional character biographies

Roman Sionis

The first Black Mask was Roman Sionis who hated masks, but he wore toxic make-up that made him to have the black skull.

Jeremiah Arkham

The second Black Mask was Jeremiah Arkham, the boss of Arkham Asylum, so after the death of the first Black Mask he wanted to continue his legacy, so he became the second Black Mask.

Powers and abilities

He is considered the top strategist and organizer in the Gotham Underworld. He has been known to torture people into insanity. It is considered his defining skill, as he both physically and mentally tortures them to a degree few could match. He is a highly accomplished athlete and has been seen to be on par with heroes and villains such as Nightwing, Robin, Red Hood, Catwoman, and at one point the Batman. All aspects are considered on par with most adventurers in his time. He is considered by many to be deadly accurate. He has been able to blend in and even fool the Batman with his disguises. The Prime Earth version of Sionis has the ability to control other people's minds with his mask.

In other media

In Batman Returns, Christopher Walken's character Max Shreck was burned and the corpse had a look alike to Black Mask. He was portrayed by Ewan McGregor in the 2020 movie Birds of Prey.
