The song is written using the E Mixolydian key with a tempo of 131 beats per minute, and a main chord progression of E–Bm–Fm.[1][2] E Mixolydian is the fifth mode of the A major scale leading to some transcriptions using this key.

On the Billboard charts, "Clocks" was able to peak at #4 on the Adult Top 40,[3] #9 on the Modern Rock Tracks,[4] #21 on the Mainstream Top 40,[5] and #29 on the Hot 100 charts.[6]

In 2004, "Clocks" won a Grammy Award for Record of the Year.[7] It was also nominated in the category of Best Single at the 2003 Q Awards.[8] Pitchfork Media ranked the song #68 on their Top 100 Singles of 2000-04 list and at #155 on their 500 Greatest Songs of the 2000s.[9][10]
